FRESH ROUND OF ATTACKS ON CIVILIANS HITS SOUTH DARFUR - UN MISSION
New York, Feb 8 2007 5:00PM Armed men assaulted and attempted to abduct a group of female internally displaced persons (IDPs) who had been on their way to collect firewood in Darfur, the latest violent incident to plague the war-torn region, the United Nations Mission in Sudan reported today. The Mission said Arab nomads attacked the IDPs about four kilometres from Kalma camp in South Darfur on Tuesday, and tried to abduct one of the women but failed. In separate incidents in South Darfur, locals broke into the office of a non-governmental organization (NGO) at Kass and looted it during a demonstration, while a fire broke out at a camp for IDPs in El Sereif, near the provincial capital of Nyala... CONDEMNING RISING VIOLENCE IN IRAQ, UN ENVOY URGES FRESH THINKING
New York, Feb 4 2007 11:00AM Reacting against rising bloodshed in Iraq, the senior United Nations envoy there today called on the country's people to display the far-sighted leadership needed to find a way out of the current crisis. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's Special Representative, Ashraf Qazi, "condemned in the strongest terms the upsurge in violence in Iraq which targeted innocent civilians in popular markets and universities." In a statement released by his office in Baghdad, Mr. Qazi said, "This seemingly unending cycle of violence killed and wounded hundreds of Iraqi civilians in Al-Sadriyah area in Baghdad, Al-Maktabat market in Al-Hillah and Kirkuk."... UN RIGHTS COUNCIL APPOINTS NOBEL PEACE LAUREATE TO LEAD MISSION TO DARFUR
New York, Jan 26 2007 6:00PM Jody Williams, winner of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize and co-founder of the Nobel Women's Initiative, will lead a five-person high-level mission to evaluate the human rights situation in the war-ravaged Darfur region, the United Nations Human Rights Council announced today. The Council's President, Mexican Ambassador Luis Alfonso de Alba, appointed the five "highly qualified persons" comprising the Darfur mission after conferring with the Council and Sima Samar, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Sudan, who will also participate in the mission... UN'S LIBERIA MISSION CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE INVESTIGATION INTO POSSIBLE SEXUAL ABUSE
New York, Jan 19 2007 6:00PM The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) has called for an immediate internal investigation after receiving information about possible sexual exploitation by some of its staff, a UN spokesperson said today. "The UN Mission in Liberia has requested the Office of Internal Oversight Services to conduct an immediate investigation, following the Mission's receipt of information suggesting that some of its personnel have been involved in sexual exploitation and abuse," Michele Montas told reporters at UN Headquarters in New York. ... Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and other top officials have declared that any form of sexual exploitation will not be tolerated and the UN has set up conduct units in all of its major peacekeeping operations to address the problem... SECURITY COUNCIL BACKS BAN KI-MOON'S CALL FOR POLITICAL MISSION IN NEPAL
New York, Jan 12 2007 2:00PM The Security Council today backed Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's call for the speedy deployment of a United Nations political mission in Nepal to monitor the cantonment of weapons and help organize elections for a constituent assembly after the recent peace accord between the Government and Maoist rebels that ended a deadly decade-long war. SUSPECTED KILLER OF TWO BLUE HELMETS IN HAITI ARRESTED BY UN MISSION
New York, Jan 5 2007 3:00PM The United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) and the country's national police today announced the arrest of a gang member wanted in connection with the killing last November of two blue helmets serving with the peacekeeping operation... The suspect is wanted in connection with the assassination of two Jordanian peacekeepers from MINUSTAH in November 2006. He is "is thought to be the chief of the cell responsible for kidnappings" within the Belony gang. Another presumed kidnapper was also arrested, according to MINUSTAH, and both suspects are being detailed by the Haitian National Police. UN FOOD AGENCY RESUMES AID FLIGHTS TO SOMALIA
New York, Dec 29 2006 11:00PM Following a temporary suspension caused by a recent flare up of violence in Somalia, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today announced a resumption of air aid deliveries to the country, where it is struggling to feed half a million people affected by floods. The UN Common Air Services (UNCAS) which is managed by WFP, resumed humanitarian flights into Somalia today with a plane leaving Nairobi for Hargeisa in northern Somalia carrying humanitarian workers and cargo. SECURITY COUNCIL IMPOSES SANCTIONS ON IRAN OVER URANIUM ENRICHMENT
New York, Dec 23 2006 9:00PM Capping months of intensive negotiations, the United Nations Security Council today unanimously decided to impose a set of sanctions against Iran in response to its uranium-enrichment activities, which Tehran says are for peaceful purposes but which other countries contend are driven by military ambitions. The adoption of the sanctions resolution came after successive reports by the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Vienna-based global nuclear watchdog, indicating its inability to certify that the country's motives are entirely peaceful. Agency Director-General Muhamad ElBaradei has said the IAEA is unable to conclude that there are no undeclared nuclear materials or activities in Iran.... ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN MISTRUST MUST BE OVERCOME, ANNAN SAYS

FREEDOM FROM POVERTY IS A HUMAN RIGHT AND NOT A MATTER OF COMPASSION, SAY UN LEADERS
New York, Dec 11 2006 12:00AM The Universal Declaration of Human Rights rings hollow to the millions of people around the world who have to struggle in extreme poverty, Secretary-General Kofi Annan said today as he called for progress on human development to go hand in hand with advances in security and human rights. In a message marking International Human Rights Day, whose theme this year is that fighting poverty should be a matter of obligation and not charity, Mr. Annan said that "if we are to be serious about human rights, we must demonstrate that we are serious about deprivation." Mr. Annan said the world's poorest are the people least capable of achieving or defending rights - such as to a decent standard of living or to food and essential health care - that others take for granted...
