DIPLOMATIC QUARTET BACKS INTERNATIONAL MECHANISM TO AID PALESTINIAN PEOPLE
New York, Jun 17 2006 9:00PM The diplomatic Quartet on the Middle East - made up of the United Nations, United States, European Union (EU) and Russian Federation - today issued a statement elaborating on an EU proposal for channeling aid directly to the Palestinian people and voiced hope that others will participate in it. The "temporary international mechanism" would be limited in scope and duration and operate with full transparency and accountability, the Quartet said in a statement, pledging to review whether it is still needed after three months. "The mechanism facilitates needs-based assistance directly to the Palestinian people, including essential equipment, supplies, and support for health services, support for the uninterrupted supply of fuel and utilities, and basic needs allowances to poor Palestinians."... ANNAN TRANSMITS REPORT ON HARIRI MURDER PROBE TO SECURITY COUNCIL
New York, Jun 10 2006 8:00PM Secretary-General Kofi Annan has sent members of the United Nations Security Council the latest report on the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, a spokesman for the world body confirmed today. Mr. Annan received the report from Serge Brammertz, the Commissioner of the International Independent Investigation Commission (IIIC) dealing with the bombing, which in addition to killing the premier also took the lives of 22 others. The Security Council has scheduled an open meeting and consultations to discuss the report with Mr. Brammertz on Wednesday, 14 June, the spokesman said. The Security Council set up UNIIIC after an earlier UN mission found Lebanon's own investigation seriously flawed and Syria primarily responsible for the political tension preceding Mr. Hariri's murder. New York, Jun 4 2006 10:00AM The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) today voiced deep concern about continuing acts of violence committed against innocent civilians in the country -- most recently the deadly attack on the Russian Embassy. "We condemn these outrageous crimes, and demand that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice," mission officials said in a statement. Reacting against the almost daily occurrence of such high levels of violence, "from which even houses of worship are not immune," UNAMI noted that they are having a severely adverse impact on the fabric of society... On the political front, UNAMI welcomed the new Government's stated intention to give the highest priority to the maintenance of public security and law and order, while strengthening the rule of law and protection of human rights for all Iraqis. ANNAN STRONGLY CONDEMNS LATEST MOSQUE BOMBINGS IN IRAQ
New York, Apr 7 2006 1:00PM United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has condemned "in the strongest possible terms" the bombing of the Buratha mosque in the Al Adhamiya area of Baghdad today. "This attack and yesterday's bombing near the holy Shrine of Imam Ali in Najaf clearly demonstrate that there are forces in Iraq determined to inflame sectarian violence and to exploit the current difficulties in forming the new government," he said through a statement delivered by his spokesman. That situation underscores the urgent need for political leaders to resolve their differences in the best interests of the nation, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said. Reconciling different sectors of Iraq society in order to stop the violence has been at the forefront of the efforts of Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, Mr. Annan's Special Representative in Iraq, Mr. Dujarric added in response to a question from a news correspondent at his daily briefing.
